Northern Arizona Ends Men's D-II Hockey's Season at Regionals

LOGAN, Utah (2/25/11) – No. 8 Northern Arizona ended the No. 4 Colorado Buffaloes hockey team’s season with three third period goals and a 4-3 victory in the first round of the ACHA West Regional Tournament on Friday at the George S. Eccles Ice Center.

“Not much you can say when you lose when you’re not supposed to lose,” said CU head coach Ken Fikis. “They played hard, that was the big thing. They played right to very end. I feel bad for the seniors; the nine that played, it was their last game. We outplayed them I thought, we outshot them, but we just couldn’t get the puck into the net.”

The loss ends a three game winning streak for the Buffs as they finish the season with a 16-11-1-2 record. Northern Arizona improves to 17-12-0-4 on the year and will play No. 2 Utah State on Saturday afternoon with a bid to nationals on the line.

Juniors Alex Lencioni and freshman Alex Lewica finished with one goal and one assist each while J.P. Park also scored for Colorado. Seniors Mark Viau and A.J. Koller added assists and senior goaltender Kevin Litinsky made 14 saves on 18 shots.

The game didn’t begin great for CU as Kevin Ingram scored for NAU 23 seconds into the game.

However Colorado rebounded and dominated the rest of the period, outshooting the Ice Jacks 11-7 in the stanza, and finally tied the game with about four minutes left on a rebound goal from Lencioni.

NAU had the chance to retake the lead in the second period after Gregory Park was awarded a penalty shot with 12:42 left in the stanza, but Litinsky denied him with a left pad save to keep it a 1-1 game.

The Buffs took their first lead of the contest with 7:16 left in the second when Lencioni stole the puck in the right NAU corner and threw it front of the net where Lewica fired a one-timer past goalie Quinn Mason. Lewica’s goal was his first of his collegiate career. He finishes the year with four points in his four games with the team.

Colorado thought they had a two goal lead after Conor Williams scored on the power play in the second period, but the officials disallowed it after determining Koller was in the crease.

The Lumberjacks retied the contest with a power play goal from Jon Ellis 41 seconds into the third, but J.P. Park gave the Buffaloes back the lead 2:39 later.

Unfortunately the lead was short lived for CU as Zach Vachris scored 35 after Park to knot the game at three. Gregory Park scored the game winner for the Ice Jacks with 10:47 left in the game.

The Buffaloes had several good scoring opportunities in the final minutes but were unable to score the equalizer as their season now comes to an end.

Friday’s contest was the final time that seniors Viau, Litinsky, Koller, Williams, Andy Neitenbach, Scott Cooley, Scott Seale, Matt Nunley, Andrew Gillis and Matt Ullrich took the ice in a CU uniform.

Colorado now heads into the offseason and will look to return the majority of their team next year. The Buffs will begin their 2011-12 season in late September/early October.

Men's Hockey Heads To Regionals

LOGAN, Utah (2/24/11) – The University of Colorado men’s hockey team will head to the 2011 American Collegiate Hockey Association West Regional Tournament on a three game win streak.

No. 4 Colorado will begin their run for a second national championship on Friday Feb. 25 at 4 p.m. against the No. 8 Northern Arizona Ice Jacks at the George S. Eccles Ice Center. If the Buffaloes beat the Ice Jacks, they will likely face either No. 3 Colorado State, No. 5 Nevada-Las Vegas or No. 6 San Diego State on Saturday with a spot to the national tournament up for grabs.

The No. 2 seed, the Utah State University Aggies will be hosting the West Regional Tournament.

The Buffs finished the regular season with a 16-10-1-2 record and two wins over Northern Colorado and one over CSU. The Ice Jacks are 17-12-0-4 this year and finished their season with two shootout losses to UNLV on Feb. 11-12.

CU defeated NAU earlier in the year in a 5-0 shutout on Dec. 4 in the Western Classic Tournament in Boulder. In that game, goaltender and 2010 All-American Kevin Litinsky made 25 saves while forward Mark Viau led the Buffs in scoring with a hat trick.

Coming into the season, Colorado was one of the frontrunners to win the national championship after finishing third last year and having 10 seniors on their 2010-11 roster. The Buffs struggled to find consistency in the first half of the season, but the team has played better since the beginning of 2011, going 5-3-0-1 since January.

If CU and CSU both win their first round games, it will be a Buffs-Rams matchup on Saturday with only one Centennial State team able to go the national tournament. CSU won the season series over CU, but the Buffs have the momentum on their side after getting a dominate 5-1 win over the Rams on Feb. 11.

Colorado State is playing No. 9 Denver in the first round at regionals, but that game won’t necessarily be an easy win for the Rams as CSU and DU have played in two one-goal contests the last two weeks.

No. 1 Eastern Washington and No. 7 San Jose State earned the automatic bids from the West Region to the Mar. 15-19 ACHA National Championships. Usually it is the top two seeds from the each region that earn the automatics bids, but SJSU earned their bid because they are hosting the national tournament.

Live audio of Colorado’s games at regionals will be available on the CU Buffs Hockey Network at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/cubuffshockey.

Colorado Girls In Sports Day on Feb. 26

BOULDER (2/18/11) – Nearly 200 young girls will descend to the University of Colorado Student Recreation Center on Saturday Feb. 26 for the ninth annual Colorado Girls in Sports Day.

The afternoon will be packed with demonstrations and sports activities to help girls, ages 5-12 get their bodies moving and get experience in many non-traditional sports. The demonstrations and sports stations will be headed up by CU’s Collegiate Sport Clubs.

“Many young girls don’t get enough exercise throughout the day,” said the event founder and Collegiate Sport Clubs director Patty McConnell. “This event will help show some of the sports that they can participate in so they can get that exercise and be healthy.”

The day will begin in the Rec Center’s East General Gym at 1 p.m. with a welcome ceremony and demonstrations of some drills and skills from CU’s fencing and taekwondo team. The girls will then break up into smaller groups and go through the six sports stations of hockey, racquetball, rugby, softball, taekwondo, and ultimate Frisbee. The day will end at 4 p.m. with a closing ceremony. CU athletes will be on hand to help teach the girls about the sports they love to play.

“Girls leave this event feeling good about having a strong, fit body, while also having the opportunity to socialize with new friends who enjoy playing sports,” McConnell said. “Girls also gain more self-confidence about themselves and their physical abilities and strengths.”

McConnell began a similar program years ago while working at Metropolitan State College of Denver; however she wasn’t able to get enough support to sustain the event long term. After coming to Colorado, McConnell gave another shot at organizing the event, and it has been a success ever since.

February was chosen to host Colorado Girls in Sports Day so it would coincide with National Girls and Women in Sports Day earlier in the month

There are still a limited number of spaces available; however girls can register up to the day of the event as long as there are openings. The event costs $10 per person, but every girl will receive a T-shirt, a finisher’s certificate, and refreshments throughout the day.

Free parking will be available in Lot 169 on campus (enter from Folsom Street at the Boulder Creek bridge).

Dance Heads To Nationals in Anaheim

ANAHEIM, Calif. (2/17/11) - The University of Colorado Buff Gold Dance team will be looking for their first national title when they head to the 2011 United Spirit Association Collegiate Championships at the Anaheim Convention Center on Feb. 26-27.

"The Buff Gold Dance team is a dedicated and hard working student organization that competes nationally and performs locally," said senior and team president Tasia Scott, whose been on the team the last four years. "We spend hours fundraising, volunteering, practicing and performing. Preparing for nationals this year has been extremely challenging and at times frustrating, but we continue to stick together and grow as a team after every practice."

For the past three years, the dance team has improved their scores and will look to continue that trend this time around as well.

CU will send 20 girls to nationals who will compete in the categories of open jazz and hip-hop. This will be the first year that the team will compete in multiple numbers and in hip-hop at nationals.

The Buff Gold Dance team is a student run collegiate sport club at the University of Colorado, yet the team is highly dedicated and motivated to their craft, practicing five days a week. They are one of the few teams that go to nationals without an official "standout" coach.

The USA Collegiate Championships will be a chance at redemption for two dancers, Allie Masse and Laura Nass. Masse blew out her knee and Nass injured her ankle in practice while the team was preparing for nationals. Both dancers have worked extremely hard in rehabbing their injuries so they can compete in Anaheim.

Colorado will leave for southern California on Friday Feb. 25.

Men's Hockey Faces UNC to End Regular Season

BOULDER (2/15/11) – The Colorado Buffaloes hockey team will conclude the 2010-11 regular season this weekend with a home-and-home series against the University of Northern Colorado Bears. CU will play UNC in Greeley on Friday at the Greeley Ice Haus at 7:30 p.m. and in Boulder on Saturday night at the CU Ice Arena at 7:15 p.m.

Saturday’s game in Boulder will be senior night as the Buffs will honor the 10 seniors during the game. The players that will be playing in their final home game are Scott Cooley, Conor Williams, Andy Neitenbach, Mark Viau, Andrew Gillis, Scott Seale, Matt Ullrich, A.J. Koller, Mike Nunley, and Kevin Litinsky. Below are short bios of all 10 players.

Last week, the Buffs defeated the CSU Rams for the first time this season in a dominate 5-1 victory in front of the CU faithful at home. Neitenbach and freshman Chase Komatz both scored two goals in the game for Colorado.

Colorado comes into this week’s matchup ranked fourth in the ACHA West Division with a 14-10-1-2 record while Northern Colorado is ranked 14th in the region with a 5-17-1-1 mark. The Buffs won the two previous games against the Bears this season, winning 10-3 on Nov. 12 and 7-5 on Nov. 13.

Since Northern Colorado moved to division two in 2008, Colorado holds a 6-2-1 series lead over their in-state rival. CU holds a 4-1 advantage against UNC at the Greeley Ice Haus and a 2-1-1 mark against the Bears at the CU Ice Arena.

On Tuesday, the final ACHA D-II rankings were released with Colorado staying at number four in the standings. The Buffs will play the No. 8 Northern Arizona Ice Jacks in the first round of the ACHA West Regional Tournament on Friday Feb. 25 in Logan, Utah. If CU can get past NAU, they will then likely face No. 3 Colorado State, No. 5 Nevada-Las Vegas, or No. 6 San Diego State the next day with a berth to the national tournament on the line.

Northern Colorado didn’t crack the top 10 in the final rankings, meaning their season will end after the final buzzer on Saturday night in Boulder.

Admission to Saturday’s game at the CU Ice Arena is $5 for the general public and $3 for students with a Buff One Card.

OMAHA, Neb. (2/13/11) – The University of Colorado swimming and diving team will send 36 swimmers to the NCAA Midwestern Collegiate Championships on Feb. 16-19 at the University of Nebraska Omaha.

“We are excited for this opportunity to compete at an NCAA championship meet for the second year in a row,” said CU team president Bruce Deakyne. “As strong as the team has been this year, we could see multiple team records fall during the four day event.”

Last year at the NCAA division II meet, the Buffaloes finished fourth in the women’s competition and third in the men’s event.

CU will compete in a total of 104 individual and 15 relay events in Omaha against Minnesota State Mankato, Nebraska Omaha, Morningside, St. Cloud State, and College of St. Mary.

The Buffs have participated in six competitions prior to this week’s meet with their most recent event coming on Jan. 21-23 at the Colorado College Classic in Colorado Springs.

Colorado’s final competition of the year will be the East Coast Championships on Apr. 1-3 in Atlanta, Ga. The Buffs have won four national titles and will be looking for their fifth championship at the ECC’s.

In order to help pay for their trip to Atlanta, CU will hold their biggest fundraiser of the year in the second annual Water Buffalo Stampede 5K on Mar. 12 on the CU campus.

Men's Hockey Defeats Colorado State 5-1

Video: Postgame interview with head coach Ken Fikis

BOULDER (2/11/11) – In what might have been a preview of the regional final, the Colorado Buffaloes hockey team finally earned a victory over their rival from Fort Collins.

Senior Andy Neitenbach and freshman Chase Komatz both scored two goals to help No. 4 Colorado defeat the No. 3 Colorado State Rams 5-1 on Friday night at the CU Ice Arena.

The victory is the Buffs first over the Rams this season and improves their record to 14-10-1-2 while CSU drops to 20-13-1-1 on the year.

Senior Conor Williams had a goal and an assist for Colorado while Neitenbach finished with a three point night, adding an assist to go with his two red lighters. Senior goaltender Kevin Litinsky (13-12-1) played solid in net for CU, making 38 saves on 39 shots.

Colorado’s game plan coming in to the contest was to get the lead early, and they did just that as Williams scored a power play goal with nearly eight minutes left in the first period. Colorado finished 3-for-8 on the power play while Colorado State went 1-for-8 with the extra attacker.

The Buffs extended their lead to two goals after applying some late pressure in the period. On a Colorado odd man rush, Komatz fired the puck from the right side, picked up the rebound in midair and swatted it into the net with 22 seconds left in the stanza.

Colorado took a 3-0 lead 1:36 into the second period after Neitenbach crashed the Rams net and poked the loose puck across the goal line for his first tally.

On the CU scoring sequence, CSU goaltender John Miller injured his right leg. After trying to skate it off, Miller was helped to the Rams locker room where he didn’t return to the game. Miller, who made 10 saves on 13 shots, was replaced by Ryan Perich, who already had two wins against Colorado this season.

Perich played solid for the first couple of minutes in net, but he couldn’t keep it a three goal game as Neitenbach scored his second of the night at 7:28 in the second period. Perich finished with 21 saves on 23 shots.

Colorado State finally got on the scoreboard with 6:47 left in the second period on a Parker Harrison power play goal in which he did some nice puck movement in front of Litinsky before sliding the puck past the CU goalie’s left pad.

The Rams entered the third period with a new sense of energy and fired some good shots on Litinsky, but last season’s first team All American goalie made big stop after big stop, keeping the game at 4-1.

Colorado extended their lead back to four goals after Komatz scored with 8:20 remaining.

The Buffs outshot the Rams in each of the first two periods, but CSU fired a fury of shots in the third to win the overall shot battle, 39-36.

CU has two more regular season games before the playoffs start, a home-and-home series against No. 14 Northern Colorado next weekend. The Buffs will begin the weekend on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Greeley Ice Haus before playing at home on Saturday at 7:15 p.m. Saturday’s game will be senior night as the team will be honoring the 10 seniors that will be playing in their final home game.

The Buffs will begin the postseason on Feb. 25-26 at the ACHA D-II West Regional Tournament in Logan, Utah. Colorado will need to get victories on both days of competition in order to advance to the national tournament. One of those wins will mostly likely have to come against Colorado State as the two schools are on a collision course to face each other in the regional final.

Women's Lacrosse Opens Season Friday at Home versus Regis

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women’s lacrosse team will begin their 2011 season on Friday against the Regis University Rangers at 4 p.m. at Kittredge Field on the CU-Boulder campus.

There will be plenty of youth on this year’s squad as the roster features a large group of sophomores and only six seniors.

Even though the team may be young, head coach Dan Finck says he likes what his squad is made up of and is expecting the sophomores to play a bigger role on the team this season

“I really like the mix of players we have on this year’s team,” Finck said. “We are a very balanced group and if we can stay on the same page, we will be successful.”

Colorado’s focus this year will be on making another run at a national championship after the team finished third in the nation last season. Nationals this year will be held from May 5-8 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Buffs will make several road trips this season to tournaments around the country, beginning with a trip out west to UC-Santa Barbara on Feb. 18-20 and out east to the University of Georgia on Mar. 24-27. Colorado will also play in Colorado State’s tournament, Apr. 1-3 in Fort Collins.

Colorado will play home games versus Lindenwood on Mar. 12 and UC-Santa Barbara on Apr. 3. CU will play CSU on Apr. 13 in Fort Collins.

"The CU men's club soccer team is proud to host the 2010 MLS Cup Champions here at CU," said CU team president Justin Macauley. "It's a testament to the growth and strength of soccer in Colorado that both the Colorado Rapids and the CU men's club soccer team were able to win the MLS Cup and the NIRSA National Title respectively."

Both teams will look repeat as champions in 2011 as the Rapids will begin their new season on Mar. 19 while the Buffs start with their title defense in September.

Synchronized Skating Heads to Sectionals

ROCHESTER, Minn. (2/1/11) – The University of Colorado synchronized skating team will be competing at the Pacific Coast Sectional Championships this weekend, Feb. 4-6.

This is the fifth year of the team’s existence; however they have only been competing in competitions for the last four years. Colorado has won the open-collegiate division all four years.

Currently the team has nine skaters, but they hope to get three more next year so they can compete in the qualifying collegiate division.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, you can find the CU synchronized skating team practicing at the crack of dawn, as the Buffs hit the CU Rec Center ice at 6:15 a.m.
The Buffs will also be skating in an exhibition on Tuesday Feb. 1 at the Westminster Promenade ice rink.

Men's Volleyball To Face Johnson and Wales and Boise State

BOULDER (1/31/11) – The University of Colorado men’s volleyball team will open up their spring schedule next weekend with matches against Johnson and Wales and Boise State.
Colorado will play Johnson and Wales in Denver at 7 p.m. on Saturday Feb. 5 and will host Boise State at the CU Rec Center in Boulder at 1 p.m. on Sunday Feb. 6.
“We beat JWU last year in an epic five game match and we’ll look to do it again this year in the battle of who is the best men’s team in Colorado,” said CU senior Kyle Rhatigan.
The Buffaloes match on Sunday against Boise State will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.
In December, CU traveled to Cedar City, Utah to participate in a regional tournament. The Buffs finished fifth out of 13 teams in Utah, going 4-2 in matches.
Last year, Colorado finished third at nationals and will look to improve that mark this year when they head to the national tournament in Houston, Texas on Apr. 7-9.
Colorado will participate in three tournaments before they head to nationals: Feb. 19-20 in Davis, Calif., Mar. 4-5 in Flagstaff, Ariz., and Mar. 18-19 in Las Vegas, Nev.

Men's Hockey Faces CSU at Budweiser Event Center

LOVELAND, Colo. (1/30/11) – The University of Colorado men’s hockey team will look to spoil the Colorado State Rams’ party as the Buffaloes will participate in the 2011 Rocky Mountain Faceoff at the Budweiser Event Center on Friday Feb. 4 at 7:05 p.m.

In recent years, the Rocky Mountain Faceoff has become a fundraiser for the CSU hockey team.

CU participated in the first in-state rivalry game at the Budweiser Event Center in 2009. Last year, the Rams played the Northern Colorado Bears at the Bud Center, which is home to the Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League.

Tickets for the game can be bought online at www.comcasttix.com, by phone at 877-544-8499, or at the Budweiser Event Center Box Office. Ticket prices will vary, but student and child tickets will have a $3 discount on them.

Colorado is currently 12-9-1-1 on the season and ranked fifth in the ACHA West Division coming into this weekends’ series at Central Oklahoma.

The No. 4 Rams have won both meetings against the Buffs this season, on Oct. 29 at the Pepsi Center in Denver and on Nov. 5 in Fort Collins.

The Buffs will host the Rams the following weekend, Friday Feb. 11 at the CU Rec Center at 7:15 p.m. CU will close out the weekend on Saturday Feb. 12 against the No. 3 San Jose State Spartans.

It looks as if both CU and CSU will have to go to regionals on Feb. 25-26 in Utah since San Jose State is hosting nationals and gets an automatic bid. Because of that, the remaining two games between CU and CSU are important for determining the seeding in Utah. The final rankings will be released no later than Friday Feb. 18.

Softball Showing Warren Miller's Wintervention on Campus

BOULDER (1/26/11) - The University of Colorado softball team will be showing Warren Miller's Wintervention on Friday Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. in MATH 100 on the CU-Boulder campus.

Tickets for the show cost $5 and can be bought at the CU softball table in the University Memorial Center (across from the Alfred Packard Grill) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every day until the show. The price will increase to $8 if purchased at the door.

The Buffs are currently 9-1 on the season and the money the team raises from the movie will help fund their trip to nationals in Columbus, Ga. in April.

"We are hoping to get a large turnout to this event so we can help pay our way to the national tournament in April," said team president Anna Wilcoxen. "Please come out and support the CU softball team."

This is the third year that the team has been showing Warren Miller films and has become the club's largest fundraiser. The softball team and Warren Miller's relationship began in 2009 when former coach and current Warren Miller Entertainment employee, Fiachra Stokes, set up the film showing as a fundraiser.

People in attendance will also receive a buy one, get one free lift ticket to Copper Mountain or Winter Park. The team will also raffle off other great prizes at the show.

All ages are welcome to this free event.

The rail jam will be a great chance for the Colorado snowboard team to highlight the tricks that the squad has been practicing since last fall.
