Varsity Men's Hockey Loses Home Opener

BOULDER (10/2/10) - The University of Colorado hockey team scored early in their home opener but the Buffaloes couldn't find the back of the net late as the Utah State Aggies won 5-4 in overtime on Saturday at the CU Ice Arena.

Colorado's record drops to 1-1 on the season while Utah State remains undefeated at 7-0.

Sophomore Jordan Lockner led the Buffs with one goal and one assist in the contest while Charlie Coleman, Andy Neitenbach and Mark Viau also scored for CU.

Senior goaltender Kevin Litinsky ended up with the loss, dropping his overall record to 1-1. Litinsky stopped 43 of USU's 48 shots in the game.

On the other side of the ice, Aggie goalie Bryce Scherschel faced 46 CU shots and stopped 42 of them.

It didn't take long for CU to get on the board with Coleman scoring nearly three minutes into the game. However USU tied the contest in the middle of the first period with a goal by Joel Basson and then took a 3-1 lead with two goals in the second from Jason Moore and Matt Ferris.

Colorado began their comeback with a goal by Neitenbach with 7:34 remaining in the second period to cut the USU lead down to one. Viau then tied the game at three with an early goal in the third.

The Buffs retook the lead after Lockner scored with 7:11 remaining, but USU's Dave Wyman scored 56 seconds later to retie the contest and force overtime.

Billy Gouthro scored the game winner for the Aggies with 3:52 left in overtime to give Utah State the 5-4 victory.

CU will face USU one more time this season at the Beehive showcase on Nov. 18 in Logan, Utah.

Next up for the Buffs is the Metro State Roadrunners on Saturday Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. The game will be played at Big Bear Ice Arena in Denver.
