Successful Weekend For Triathlon

BOULDER (9/27/10) – The University of Colorado triathlon team had a busy weekend on Sept. 25-26 with athletes competing in the USA Triathlon National Age Group Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala., the Oktoberfest Sprint Triathlon in Longmont, Colo., and volunteered in the local Front Range community.

In the Oktoberfest Sprint Triathlon on Sept. 26, CU won the club competition and swept the female podium with the top three spots being Buffs.

Tess Amer won the women’s race with a time of one hour, six minutes and 40 seconds while teammates Maggie Scanlan finished second with a time of 1:07:37 and Ashley Walker finished third with a time of 1:08:27.

Ryan Bice was the top CU athlete in the men’s race with a time of 58 minutes and 52 seconds.

Several triathletes also traveled to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to compete in the USA Triathlon National Age Group Championships on Sept. 25-26. Triathletes had to qualify in a USAT sanctioned triathlon earlier in the year in order to race in the event. Results from the race were unavailable.

The Collegiate National Championships will be held in Tuscaloosa, Ala on Apr. 16, 2011.

Also on Sept. 25, 11 CU triathletes traveled to Fort Collins to volunteer at a Boys and Girls Club of Larimer County. The team helped out in a family fundraiser called Day for Kids and assisted Ironman triathlete Pam Schukie in putting on a mini triathlon event in order to raise money for the Ironman Janus Charity Challenge.

The Buffs’ next event will be the Pumpkinman Triathlon in Las Vegas, Nev. on Oct. 16.

Colorado will then be on hiatus until March where they’ll compete in the MCTC Conference Championships at Lake Havasu, Ariz. In the mean time the team will continue to train and do outreach programs for not only the triathlon community but for the Front Range community as well.
