Women's Lacrosse Finishes Eighth at Nationals

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (5/7/11) – The No. 1 seeded University of Colorado women’s lacrosse team finished eighth at the Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates National Championships after the Buffaloes were defeated 6-5 by the No. 2 seeded Florida Gators in the seventh place game on Saturday at the Scottsdale Sports Complex.

CU ends their regular season with a 16-4 overall record after the Buffs lost their final three games at nationals.

Sophomore attackers Sara Shea and Alexa Jellison were the two Buffs that were able to find the back of the net against the Gators as Shea finished with three goals while Jellison finished with two.

Florida jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, but Colorado settled down later in the period as the Buffs scored three straight goals and took a 3-2 advantage at halftime. Shea picked up two goals in the stanza while Jellison picked up one.

Just like in the first half, the Gators scored two early goals in the second and retook the lead. Jellison tied the game at four for CU, but Florida answered back with two goals in the final 15 minutes of the contest. With time running out, Shea scored her hat trick goal with two minutes left to cut the Florida lead to one. In the final minute, sophomore midfielder Andie Solomon received a penalty shot, but her possible game tying goal missed and the Gators held on for the victory.

In the WCLA Championship game on Saturday, the No. 6 seeded Colorado State Rams defended their national title as they beat the No. 9 seeded UCLA Bruins 11-9.
