Women's Rugby Repeats as Stanford Invite Champions

PALO ALTO, Calif. (1/19/11) - The University of Colorado women's rugby team began their 2011 spring season the same way they did in 2010, with a victory in the Stanford Invitational tournament.

The Buffaloes defeated UCLA 15-0 in the championship game this past weekend to win their second title in as many years in northern California.

"I was very happy with how my girls played this weekend," said Colorado head coach Jim Stebbins. "We travelled with 30 players and were able to get them all in a game. This will be a good building block for us going into the spring season and the playoffs."

On the first day of competition, CU defeated Chico State 27-5 and Cal 15-0 before falling to UC Santa Barbara 7-5. The Buffs still earned a spot in the quarterfinals on day two where they took care of business by defeating Oregon 17-0 and then host Stanford 19-5 in the semifinals. CU shutout the Bruins in the championship game later in the day.

Colorado is now 7-3 on the season and 2-2 in league play. CU picked up wins in the fall against Colorado State on Sep. 26 and Air Force on Oct. 10.

The Buffs have two more home regular season games in the spring with them hosting Air Force on Feb. 27 and Wisconsin on Mar. 14. Colorado will head to the Western Regionals on Apr. 2-3.
