BOULDER (12/6/10) – It will be a battle between the top two teams in the ACHA Pacific division as the No. 2 University of Colorado D-III men’s hockey team hosts No. 1 College of the Canyons on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the CU Ice Arena.
Colorado is 16-1 this season and is riding a 15 game winning streak heading into this weekend’s matchup that might not only decide the top team in the region but also the top team in the nation. The Buffaloes defeated the University of Wyoming 5-4 in a shootout last Friday.
From Santa Clarita, Calif., the College of the Canyons Cougars. are 12-0 this year and are coming off two wins last weekend over Northern Arizona where they outscored the Lumberjacks 31-2.
Colorado is led in scoring by Zach Lass who has 32 points this season (16 goals and 16 assists) and Brennan Stieneker who has 28 points (nine goals and 19 assists). Tyler Moore has also had a good season as he’s scored 10 goals and has added 14 assists for a total of 24 points.
The Buffs have used a two goaltender system so far this year and its worked with Alex Pomerleau and Gordon Burns each having seven wins, a goals against average below three and a save percentage above 0.900.
CU has nine games left in the regular season and Friday’s game will mark their last one of the fall semester. The Buffs first game in the spring will be on Jan. 14 against Texas Tech.
